Jonathon is an 11 year old from Mineral Wells, Texas. Jon Jon, as his friends and family call him, became a Syme's amputee at the age of three. It would seem that such a disability would slow him down. Not Jonathon. He is extremely active in most sports and activities. He loves to play baseball, basketball, football, ride his bike, etc. If it weren't for the North Carolina and Texas Longhorns logos laminated on his prosthesis, you might not guess that he is an amputee! He is a very determined and talented young man and we are happy to be a part of his care.

My name is Gina Graham. On August 28, 2004, I was in a single automobile accident in which my left arm was severed just beneath my elbow. Before my accident, I was heavily involved in the sport of rodeo and very athletic. I ran barrels, trained horses, raised bucking bulls, played softball, played golf, played tennis, and kick boxed. I was always up to competing in almost any athletic event I was challenged to. In 1992/93, I was Miss Illinois High School Rodeo Queen. I represented Illinois at the National High School Finals Rodeo in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, cutting, and queen contest. I came to Stephenville, TX in 1993 on a rodeo scholarship to Tarleton. I fell in love with Texas and stayed.

On August 28, 2004, my life drastically changed in an instant. Everything came to a screeching halt as I was presented with a new challenge of living my active life as an amputee. I had 2 choices: I could lie in bed and cry while life passed me by, or I could get up and go right back to living. Of course I chose option 2 and never let this change slow me down. I immediately started physical therapy and the search for a good prosthetic company. I visited several companies in the Metroplex area, Houston, and even as far as Oklahoma City. I was very disappointed with the poor service and the staff’s negativity about my situation. I was starting to feel like I was never going to be able to function in a prosthetic. Then a friend handed me a brochure from Next Step Prosthetics in Weatherford. I shrugged and thought I might as well call them, it couldn’t get any worse. That call changed everything. The prosthetist, Mikeal Beck, was so upbeat and positive. His attitude reflected the idea of whatever we have to do to make it work, we will do. My spirits were immediately lifted and the fitting process began. His office staff was extremely helpful in booking appointments, working with insurance and payments, and making sure I was OK. They were very encouraging. It has been a long hard road for this process. I have had several financial and physical hurdles to overcome and Mike and his team have been right there through it all. I am still undergoing reconstructive surgeries on my arm to get better functionality. In the meantime, Mike said he would not give up and he meant it! He got me into a passive and a myoelectric arm which are helping me to regain my activity. Mikeal Beck gives his patients 100% all the time. He is willing to go outside the box to try unconventional ideas. When I was hit with a brief moment of despair, he said he would not give up as long as I didn’t. That attitude from a prosthetist was enough to gain my loyalty for a lifetime. Thanks to all the staff at Next Step for everything they have done for me!
